Application Preparation

Every year, 203 students are admitted to McMaster’s undergraduate medical program. The selection criteria are based on a set of cognitive and non-cognitive skills. Each applicant’s achievements, both academic and non-academic are reviewed to select the best candidates. Not all applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements will be offered a position at the university. The university encourages students with different degrees to apply as they will be required to provide proof of non-academic qualities such as reliability, perseverance, leadership and responsibility.

How to apply

Before applying to Mc Master Medical School, start by reviewing the academic requirements and essential skills and abilities requirements to see if you’ve met the bare minimums. All applications to Mc Master are done online at the Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS). Applicants are requested to begin the applications by mid-September and submit the completed application forms by early October.

How McMaster selects students

The Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine selects students who are passionate about being physicians with the capacity and flexibility to practice any field of medicine. Review of applications involves the faculty, members of the community and medical students. The university invites approximately 550 applicants for an interview in March or April of the entry year.

The interviewees are selected based on their composite score which is calculated by considering different factors such as their grade point average, MCAT score and scores from CASPer® test. Other factors such as geographical status are considered when choosing from a pool of applicants. When called upon for an interview, applicants are requested to attend at the specified date or time. Mc Master doesn’t conduct video conference and telephone interviews. During the interview, applicants will not be assessed for knowledge in health care.

Offers of admission

After attending interviews in April or March, Mc Master will send the results to all applicants via. There are three results to expect on this email: an offer of admission, waitlist for offer on admission or denial. The results are usually sent on the second Tuesday in May. Upon receiving an offer of admission, you may be required to look for certain things in order to meet the condition of that offer.
