ERAS Medical Residency Matching

Applying to the ERAS United States Residency Match has become increasingly competitive. Hospitals offered a record number of residency positions within the National Residency Matching Program yet many medical students find themselves in an unmatched position. For International medical Graduates applying to the National Residency Matching Program, it has become even more challenging.

There was a small decline in the number of medical student applicants who graduated from medical school abroad and tried to match. The number of international medical graduates who are not US citizens and who applied dropped from 7,460 in 2016 to 7,284 this year. This may reflect the increasing level of competition and the acceptance of pursuing related healthcare careers.

  1. Applying to a specialty that’s too competitive for the applicant’s academic standing
  2. Poor interviewing or interpersonal skills
  3. Several attempts at the USMLE for a passing score
